Beautiful Pictures of Mount Rainier, One of North America’s Prettiest Sights

Mount Rainier is located about 54 miles southeast of Seattle in Washington state. The beautiful mountain rises to nearly 14,500 feet and is the tallest of the Cascade mountain range. Every year, thousands upon thousands travel from near and far to take in its beautiful sights, hike its numerous trails, and climb its challenging peaks.

In May 1792, Captain George Vancouver would become the first European to view Mount Rainier. His expedition would lead to many sites in the Puget Sound being named after him, including the city of Vancouver. Over the next century, it would become a favorite among explorers and naturalists of the time for its beauty, though after completing the difficult climb one man conceded he preferred the view from below. In 1893, the park was set aside as a reserve and soon after was made a national park by President McKinley in 1899, the fifth such area at the time to receive such a designation.

An extremely popular destination for mountaineers in North America, Rainier is the United States largest glacier south of Alaska. The climb is arduous and not for the faint of heart. While some 13,000 attempt to summit every year, it is estimated that only about half are successful. Like other mountains, Rainier summit expeditions usually fail due to weather. No matter a climber’s ability, preparedness, or the time took planning, the simple unlucky draw of a harsh winter storm moving in at an inopportune time can mean a climber’s failure. Sadly, too often than not these unsuccessful climbs have a much sadder conclusion: though not a huge number, two people on average die every year attempting to climb Mount Rainier. The worst single climbing related incident on the mountain occurred in 1981 when 11 people died on an expedition due to an ice fall. Because of the significant danger they will face, climbers wishing to go above a certain elevation must register with park officials and those who aim to solo climb must receive written permission.

If you don’t have the guts, or skill to make it to the top (Lord knows I have neither), you can still take in the beautiful landscapes it offers. Today, we’ve compiled a gallery of some really great pictures of Mount Rainier. Hope you enjoy them!
