Clever Series of Surreal Collages by Eugena Loli

Born in Greece and now living in California with stops in between in the U.K. and Germany, it’s no surprise that Eugena Loli would be drawn to creating surreal collages. She herself is drawn from a bit of everywhere, so it makes sense that her art would be too.

She readily admits to having no interest in “finding her style,” believing that to be “artistic death.” Instead, her works are flowing and always changing. Each work begins with a base image which is built around, sometimes with an idea of where she’s going and sometimes not. The base image may not necessarily even be included in the final work.

Some of our favorites of Eugena’s clever surreal collages appear below. Keep up with her latest by visiting her website or following her on flickr, where she’s made much of the files comprising her work available.

Flowers Replace Guns in Historic Photo Collages

French creative Blick creates historic photo collages where large colorful flowers replace guns and other objects. The juxtaposition between the two source materials is immense, with the beautiful flowers contrasting greatly with the monochrome images of men in the clutches of war.

Most of the images you’ll see here are among the most iconic photos from the World War II era. Most will recognize Soldiers Raising Flag on Iwo Jima or Soldiers Wading Through Jungle Stream, and realize that the photos have been altered. By using such widely recognized images, Blick assures that anyone viewing will understand his message and examine the question of what has been replaced and why.

Illustrator Kayan Kwok Creates Surreal Series of Banana Collages

Hong Kong-based illustrator Kayan Kwok‘s latest is a surreal series of banana collages meant to pay homage to the American pop culture advertisements of the 1920s-1960s she admires so much. The series is part of her 2014 a poster per day project which mixes contemporary and retro design elements. Certainly a much different way to use bananas in art than the tattooed bananas by End Cape we featured previously.

Using black and white vintage photos juxtaposed with colorized bananas and other pieces results in final posters which are quite fascinating to examine. With such oddly selected combinations, the collages are unpredictable, with many producing quite curious results. A selection of Kayan’s surreal banana collages is below, if you’d like to follow along with the poster per day project visit her website or follow her on Instagram, Facebook, and Behance.
