Dream Big: Peter Fecteau’s Amazing Rubik’s Cube Portrait of Martin Luther King

After graduating college, Peter Fecteau went to work in a design position. When the company he worked for decided to sponsor an art competition, he knew he wanted to participate but had no idea what to submit. He thought and thought throughout his days but came up with nothing until one night the inspiration came to him while sleeping. The Rubik’s cubes which he had spent so much downtime with during the days racking his mind would serve as his muse. With that, Peter got to work.

An admirer of Dr. Martin Luther King, Peter chose him as his subject and chose to name the work “Dream Big.” The final image he wished to create was first designed by computer. Then, with the help of six volunteers they went to work “solving” the 4242 Rubik’s cubes in the proper way to fit the final creation. With that done, assembling the cubes took an additional five and a half hours. At completion, the project weighed roughly 1000 pounds (454 kg), measured 19′ x 8’6″ x 2.25″ (5.8m x 2.6m x 5.7cm), and cost $9000.

Though he was not able to find a buyer for his exhibition “Dream Big,” the hard work was still worth it. Peter estimates that during two weeks it was displayed his piece was seen by over 30,000 people.
